Gervasi Vineyard won big at the 2016 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition held in late March earning seven medals, including two Double Gold Medals and the prestigious award for “Best in Class Cabernet Sauvignon”. Gervasi’s classic Cabernet Sauvignon, Abbraccio, meaning “Embrace”, took a spot among the top eight in the overall competition, with 3,824 wines total wines entered. This full bodied wine embodies bold layers of black currant, black cherries and notes of plum.
The upscale, Tuscan-themed winery was one of two Ohio wineries to secure the “Best in Class” within the top eight categories. The local winery located in Canton, which just celebrated its sixth birthday, entered seven of their 27 varietals in the competition, and took home seven awards; each wine entered at this prestigious international competition was honored.
Also earning a Double Gold Medal is the winery’s Red Zinfandel, Zin Zin, which presents attributes of blackberry, raspberry and black cherry interlaced with nuances of oak.
Three Gold Medals were awarded including one white, one red and one sweet wine. Gervasi’s Semi-Dry Riesling, Piove “Raining”, features refreshing nuances of apricot and peach; Truscano, Gervasi’s own Sangiovese super Tuscan style wine conveys attributes of cherry, plum, black currant and subtle oak, which is a tribute to the outstanding wines of Italy; and Sognata “Dream” Vidal Blanc Ice Wine, intensely sweet with rich aromas and flavors of honey, pear, apricot and tangerine.
Silver Medals were awarded to a Rose, Romanza “Romance”, featuring gentle sweetness and delicate aromas of strawberry; and Ciao Bella “Hello Beautiful”, a Chardonnay with alluring ripe tropical fruit and gentle toasted oak.
“We are incredibly honored and proud of our showing at the recent Finger Lakes International Wine Competition,” said General Manager, Scott Swaldo. “Winning the Best in Class Cabernet Sauvignon, along with our other medals, is a testament to the outstanding work of our Winemaker, Andy Codispoti and his team.”
The 16th annual Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, hosted in Rochester, New York, is one of the largest in the world with 916 wineries competing, including all 50 states, 10 Canadian Provinces, and 26 countries from around the world.
Gervasi Vineyard produces wines made from estate, and imported domestic grapes. Gervasi’s team of wine experts, headed by winemaker, Andrew Codispoti, have impeccable taste and resources for finding the best selections for over a dozen varietals within their award-winning collection. Codispoti, aspires to produce elegant wines of the highest quality that will complement gatherings of family and friends.
“When I first walked the sun-drenched Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in California, I knew that Abbraccio had to come from there. Likewise with Zin Zin and our other awarded wines,” said Andrew Codispoti. “Superior grapes, stylistic innovation, and an impassioned winemaking team have enabled us to produce soulful and evocative wines with the right mix of old world art and new world science.”
An Italian immigrant, Codispoti humorously links the beginning of his winemaking career to the age of four when he stomped grapes in his birth town in southern Italy. Codispoti’s family owned several small vineyards in the area and over time the winemaking traditions of his father and mother exposed him to the art of old world winemaking and set the tone for his philosophy and appreciation of wine.
The vineyard recently debuted their 27th wine varietal, including three new Family Reserve Wines created from grapes grown in the winery’s own vineyard, which provided a mature harvest for the first time in 2014. The winery produces over 20,000 gallons of wine a year, yielding 100,000 bottles sold locally and across the country.
Gervasi Vineyard, located in Canton, Ohio, is a 55-acre estate that features five acres of vineyards, a state-of-the-art winery, three restaurants including the famous Italian Bistro housed in the restored barn, Marketplace Gift Shop, The Villas Boutique Inn, and destination weddings in the Tuscan-themed outdoor Pavilion and indoor Ballaria.
