When he started Valley Vineyards back in 1970, Ken Schuchter wasn’t setting out to win awards. He was just looking to escape the daily grind. He had a good job as head of the suggestion department at GM – a career he chose over playing for the Cincinnati Reds. (For a simple reason: The car company paid more.) But 18 years in, he knew it just wasn’t for him.
“I never liked it because I had to sit at a desk with a shirt and tie on,” the now 84-year-old said. “I thought, my hand doesn’t hold a pencil that well. I’d rather hold a hammer.'”
So with a couple of partners, he set to work building something of his own, on family land in Morrow.
